Iowa

Hi everyone. It's 10:45 pm and we're at a Comfort Inn outside Omaha, Nebraska. It's too late to find a campground and set up a tent at this late hour so we decided to check into a motel. Our plan is to push as fast as possible through the dull states of Iowa and Nebraska so we'll have lots of time to camp and explore the beautiful and interesting states.

Anyways, this blog probably won't be too interesting since it's late and I'm pretty tired and burnt out from staring at the median strip for too long. The moms are asleep and Mike is watching Futurama. I'll try and post the highlights of the trip thus far before I curl up with Mouser and doze off too.

So much has happened since I last posted. Our party on Friday night at the Landmark was bittersweet. It was heartwarming to see so many of our friends come out to say see you later to us. We'll miss them all so much. Saturday was spent having brunch with my Dad and sister Jessica at the Plaza, and then doing last minute cleaning and packing.

This morning Michael and I had to be at the Penske office at 8 am to pick up the truck. When we got back to the eastside, my Mom, Jack, Jessica, her husband Chris, Sobo, and Neuman were there to greet us. They helped us pack up the truck. I cannot thank them enough. Our neighbor Samantha helped to guard the truck from any would be thieves. Monica and Tom came around 11 and after some last minute tidying up we hit the road around noon.

Westward Ho! Micheal & Monica in the Penske truck and Mom and I in the VW, we drove through Madison and down to Dubuque. Southeastern Wisconsin is just gorgeous. The weather was beautiful but it was very hot. We're trying to use the air conditioning as little as possible to save gas.

Dubuque, isn't that where they make all the ham? Iowa seems to be full of nothing but field after field of corn. You can farms in the distance nestled among the endless rolling cornfields. It was pretty in a dull sort of way. I guess I just kinda zoned out after awhile and turned into a driving zombie. We enjoyed seeing the monstrous wind turbines. We stopped at a Cracker Barrel for dinner in some random Iowa town- I don't remember which. Iowa seems so empty and many of the podunk towns are named after larger, more interesting cities like Oakland and Brooklyn. Odd.

When we hit Omaha we noticed large signs simply saying WEST and NORTH with pointing arrows. This country is vast, it's mind boggling.

Goodnight, I will blog again as soon as possible!

Nice bloggin' hon.

For the historical record, the Cracker Barrel was just outside of Des Moines.

I love the WEST and NORTH signs. :)

Might just want to use the AC. As much as hyper-milers irritate me, apparently the drag from having your windows open can be worse than just using the AC for mileage purposes. Good to see you all made it in one piece... Well 4 pieces...

What episode of Futurama was Mike watching? I hope it was either Future Stock or The Farnsworth Parabox.

Maybe he was watching Bendin' in the Wind. That would have been appropriate for a cross-country trip to San Francisco.

The Futurama episode in question was "Bendless Love".

now that i know which futurama episode was being watched - i don't think i need to read anymore blog postings... the episode was really the most important part of the western travel blogs...
